Our Oregon Good Sam chapters do more than camp! They are active in their communities, participate in local and national clean up the roadside campaigns, and many adopt a local park and assist in maintenance and planning for improvements. We are also active fund raisers for many local and national charities but hold Dogs for the Deaf in a special place in our heart for many reasons.
The training center for Dogs for the Deaf is in our home state Oregon and special in that way. They are using dogs found in humane shelters and training to help those who are hearing impaired. Since many campers are pet lovers, we appreciate their efforts to save and rehabilitate these dogs. They are placing these dogs free of charge to the hearing impaired in states all over the nation and when someone is identified in Oregon we can be involved with initial survey work. They are doing some good work and we can see our funds applied first hand. For more than 14 years straight, Oregon Good Sam Club has been the #1 state Good Sam contributor to the Dogs for the Deaf and we take it seriously. We cannot be prouder when we say that "Sammie", the Dogs for the Deaf mascot, lives in Oregon again this year! Please visit the Dogs for the Deaf site for more information. There are crafters all over Oregon working on washable quilts, afghans and blankets for small children. They are collected at our Oregon Good Sam events as part of the Linus Project.
Then they are distributed, by our Linus Coordinator, throughout the state to local shelters, hospitals, fire and emergency response teams for further distribution to children who have a need for a warm fuzzy to hang on to with a warm and safe feeling. |

Oregon Good Sam has selected the support of Veterans as their special charity for 2010, as it is a way for our hearts and hands to reach out to those in need who have served in our military. America is the "Home of the Free...Because of the Brave" and whenever our Oregon Good Sam membership can reach out the hand of friendship to Veterans in VA Hospitals and Homes and in our own communities then we can live up to the Veterans Fund’s motto of "Every Veteran...Every Day!" This is a win-win effort for us all. Continuing our efforts, started in 2009, in 2010, we will be reaching out to Veterans and trying to relieve their loneliness by being a friend. |
